How it works

Three quick steps

1

Add your wedding date

Enter the date and every stage becomes a real deadline — "by March 2026", and so on.

2

Tick tasks as you go

Work down the countdown, from 12 months out to the big day. Your progress is saved on your device.

3

Print or share it

Print your checklist (or save it as a PDF) and add your own custom tasks whenever you like.

How to plan a wedding: the 12-month countdown

Planning a wedding feels enormous until you break it into stages. The trick isn't doing everything at once — it's doing the right thing at the right time. Here's the countdown the checklist above follows, from the big early decisions down to the final details.

The foundations (12+ months out)

It all starts with three linked decisions: your budget, a rough guest list and the venue. Your headcount drives the venue, and the venue often fixes the date. Lock these three before anything else — they shape the entire rest of the plan.

The key vendors (6–11 months out)

The good vendors book up fast. Secure your photographer, caterer and music early, then your florist, officiant and cake. This is also when to build a free wedding website for invitations and RSVPs, and to start shopping for what you'll wear.

The details (2–5 months out)

Now come the details that make the day yours: your invitation wording, your vows, the final menu and the playlist. Mail invitations 2 to 3 months out to leave room for replies.

The home stretch (the final month)

The last month is all logistics: the seating chart, place cards, the day-of timeline and final payments. Delegate day-of tasks to someone you trust or a coordinator so that, when it arrives, you can simply enjoy it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I plan a wedding step by step?
Work backwards from your date. Start 12 months out with budget, guest list and venue; then book key vendors, followed by stationery, attire and details as the day gets closer. This checklist drops every task into the right window so nothing slips.
How long does it take to plan a wedding?
Most couples plan over 12 to 18 months, but it is very doable in less. The checklist works for any runway: add your date and every stage shifts automatically to fit the time you have left.
What should I do first when planning a wedding?
Set a budget, draft a rough guest list and book the venue — in that order. Your headcount drives the venue, and the venue often fixes the date. Once those three are locked, everything else follows.
Is this wedding planning checklist free?
Completely free, with no sign-up and no email. Tick off tasks, add your own and your progress stays saved on your device.
Can I print the checklist or save it as a PDF?
Yes. The Print button opens a clean version of the checklist; choose "Save as PDF" in the print dialog to keep a copy or send it to your partner.
Can I add my own tasks?
Yes. Every section has an "+ Add task" button for anything specific to you — a family tradition, a local vendor, whatever you need. Your additions are saved alongside the rest.
What is the easiest way to save time planning?
Keep everything in one place online. A free wedding website handles invitations, RSVPs and the guest list together, which removes a big chunk of the stationery and chasing. Build your free wedding website
